Reflection on gratitude, pleasure, joy
So I have been enjoying the pleasure of doing some catch-up on LJ friends' posts. reginaterrae and bobby1933 has posted recently on being thankful. Interesting, lovelt posts.
I am a firm believer in appreciating one's delights and advantages, the graces one receives to use or just to perceive in passing.
But I think we're also penalized for the good things we experience or receive, by those in power over us specifically or by class. If we recognize goodness in our lives, everything is swell and we have nothing to complain of, we're told.
We USians do get trained to be ever-hungry, to dismiss what we have as uninteresting or unimportant as we strive strive strive for the next goal.
But we also get trained, some of us, to lie still and stay in "our places" if every moment isn't Absolute Blazing Agony.
So no wonder if we avoid appreciation and thankfulness. It gets used against us.
